Flood ruined private Bell concert; moved to country club

When an ice jam sent a sudden surge of water into Lisa Hastings’ St. Andrews home this spring, the Red River damaged more than her walk-out basement.

The water ruined her chance to host a concert in her home, starring her favourite Christian musician. Hastings outbid rival fans to win the concert with Steve Bell in the Free Press Pennies from Heaven fundraising auction last fall. Bell was slated to play the private gig on May 28.

But two months after flood water gutted her basement, Hastings’ home is still a disaster.

She said she and her husband are still trying to clean out destroyed insulation, furniture and other salvaged items from the basement cluttering her main floor.

“It’s extensive,” Hastings said. “We had to jackhammer through stonework to get in behind to take the insulation out. We’re still dealing with it.”

But with the help of friends and neighbours, Hastings didn’t have to give up the $4,000 prize she snagged
